Bihar produces over 90% of India's makhana. The lotus seeds are harvested from natural ponds in Darbhanga and Madhubani districts, where farming communities have cultivated them for generations.
In 2022, Bihar makhana received its Geographical Indication (GI) tag — a recognition of its unique quality, heritage, and the traditional farming practices that make it special.
